Set the controls to roll four d6 and keep the highest three, and the notation field shows 4d6kh3. That is the fastest way to pick up notation: change something you understand and watch what the text does.
The controls describe one kind of die plus a modifier, which covers nearly everything anyone builds by hand. An expression that mixes dice, such as 3d8 plus 2d6 plus 7, stays in the notation field, because there is no honest way to lay that out as controls without hiding part of it.
